According to unofficial information from the White House, the US is going to transfer controversial depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine.
Reuters has obtained documents showing that President Joe Biden’s administration will send controversial depleted uranium armor-piercing munitions to Ukraine for the first time.
According to the agency, missiles that could help destroy Russian tanks are part of a new military aid package for Ukraine to be unveiled next week.
“The ammunition can be fired from American Abrams tanks, which are expected to be delivered to Ukraine in the coming weeks, according to a person familiar with the matter. An official said the aid package will be worth between $240 million and $375 million.” – reports Reuters.
While Britain shipped depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine earlier this year, this would be the first shipment of depleted uranium munitions from the US, likely to spark controversy. Earlier, the Biden administration decided to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions, despite concerns about the threats these weapons pose to civilians.
Depleted uranium ammunition. Why is it controversial?
The International Coalition to Prohibit Uranium Weapons says breathing depleted uranium dust is associated with dangerous health risks, including cancer and birth defects.
The United States used depleted uranium munitions in large quantities during the Gulf Wars of 1990 and 2003 and the NATO bombing of the former Yugoslavia in 1999, Reuters recalls.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), studies conducted in the former Yugoslavia, Kuwait, Iraq and Lebanon “have shown that the existence of depleted uranium residues dispersed in the environment poses no radiological risk to the population of the affected regions.” .”
Still, the radioactive material could add to the huge challenges of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction. Parts of the country are already littered with unexploded cluster bombs and other munitions and hundreds of thousands of anti-personnel mines.
