Ihor Kolomoisky, a Ukrainian oligarch and main supporter of Volodymyr Zelensky’s 2019 presidential campaign, has been officially charged with fraud. The announcement was made by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU): the SBU and the Economic Security Office of Ukraine have declared that they will investigate Kolomoisky for fraud and laundering of illegally obtained goods. Kolomoisky has yet to publicly comment on the allegations.
Preliminary investigations will focus on Kolomoisky’s alleged role in laundering more than $130 million transferred abroad, according to Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office. The agency said the oligarch would make the transfers using banks under his control between 2013 and 2020. To make matters worse, Kolomoisky’s arrest was ordered, on the same day that Zelensky, in his evening speech, recalled the importance of fighting those who have not respected the law in recent years: “There will be no more decades of status quo for those who plundered Ukraine and placed themselves above the law and all rules. The law has to work.” Originally from the city of Dnipro in central Ukraine, Igor Kolomoisky also owns one of the most influential TV channels in the country.
