Russia launched an attack on one of the most important Ukrainian ports

Just before talks on the grain deal, Russia launched an attack on one of Ukraine’s main grain export ports.

On the night from Sunday to Monday, Russia carried out an airstrike on one of Ukraine’s main grain export ports, Izmail on the Danube, Reuters news agency reported.

The strike took place just hours before the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In Sochi, politicians will discuss the grain agreement, from which Moscow withdrew in mid-July. This will be Erdogan’s first visit to Russia in more than a year and the first face-to-face meeting between the presidents since October 2022.

Grain Agreement

In July 2023, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Turkish politician insisted on the continuation of the grain agreement.

Zelensky then told journalists that “the whole world is interested in the functioning of the grain corridor.” – It is very important that we work with partners in such a way that life in the Grain Corridor, and thus the lives of people on other continents, including Asia and Africa, does not depend on the mood of the President of the Grain Corridor located. The Russian Federation has woken up Vladimir Putin, he said

Recall that the Russian Federation violated the grain agreement and revoked all security guarantees for ships traveling from the Black Sea ports. In mid-August, the media reported that the Russian Federation, Turkey and Qatar were preparing a new agreement that would replace the grain agreement. However, neither Qatar nor Turkey has officially endorsed the idea.

Meanwhile, the United Nations, with Turkey’s participation, has been preparing new proposals to restore the grain deal. They assume that the subsidiary of the Russian Agricultural Bank will be connected to the SWIFT system and the frozen assets of Russian companies producing fertilizers in Europe will be unlocked.
