Ukraine refuses to accept Western tanks. Reason given

Last week, Ukraine refused to accept ten old Leopard 1A5 tanks from Germany due to their poor technical condition.

As “Der Spiegel” writes, Ukraine informed the special headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense in Berlin that German tanks that had reached Poland and were to be sent from there to the front needed to be repaired.

“Since there are no trained technical personnel or sufficient spare parts, there is no point in sending Leopards to Ukraine,” we read in the publication. The daily recalls that the federal government in Berlin announced more than six months ago that it would supply more than a hundred older Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine.

Ukraine’s allies began supplying the country with tanks in the spring, including Leopard 1 and 2 vehicles. Kiev needs them to launch a counter-offensive and recapture the Russian-occupied territories.

“Scrap” for Ukraine?

Experts have been sounding the alarm for weeks about the poor technical condition of the Leopard 1A5 aircraft. Some vehicles that came to Ukraine from Greece as part of the replacement of local equipment with new German models have not been modernized for more than 30 years.

As Ralf Thiele, chairman of the German Military-Political Association, said in an interview, first-generation Leopards are still useful despite having poorer armor protection and lower accuracy compared to more modern tanks of this type.

According to him, restoring their combat readiness could take several to nine months. – This is due to the lack of production chains. There are no factories, no workers and no spare parts, Thiele said in an interview with SRF, a Swiss radio and television channel.

At the same time, he answered in the affirmative when asked whether “it can be said with irony that the West supplies Ukraine with scrap metal.” – If you want to say it mockingly: yes. But if misused, even new systems can quickly become scrap, he added.
