Tension remains very high between Serbia and Kosovo after, on 24 September, three Serbian armed men and a Kosovar policeman were killed in Banjska, in the north of Kosovo. The alarm now comes from the United States. According to breaking news, Serbia is massing troops on the border. While Pristina and Belgrade face accusations over the new escalation, NATO announces the reinforcement of the KFOR operation.
“We see a large Serbian military deployment along the border with Kosovo”: this is how White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby made it known that the situation on the border between Serbia and Kosovo is far to be under control. In Kirby’s words, “this includes an unprecedented deployment of advanced Serbian artillery, tanks and mechanized infantry units. We believe this is a very destabilizing development.” Speaking to journalists, the spokesman for the White House National Security Council addressed Belgrade and made an appeal to avoid an escalation and, therefore, a new war: “We ask Serbia to withdraw these forces from the border”.
