Interestingly, the results differ significantly from those presented in the exit poll just after the polls closed. The survey showed that Progressive Slovakia won with a result of 23.5%. The Fico party achieved a result of 21.9 percent and HLAS – 12.2 percent.
Who will form the government?
The media points to Fico’s Russian sympathies and the main theme of his campaign, which is ending military aid to Ukraine. If the unofficial election results are confirmed, Smer-SSD will have to look for a coalition partner to form a stable government.
Peter Pellegrini, leader of the HLAS party, has already announced that he is ready for such talks.
– The distribution of seats confirms HLAS as a party without which it is impossible to create a normally functioning government coalition, according to Pellegrini.
The new parliament could consist of as many as ten parties, from libertarians to the far right, which could prolong and complicate the coalition process.
– If Smer joins the government, we will not send a single shipment of ammunition to Ukraine – Fico recently told his supporters.
Fico’s statements raised concerns among members of the European Union and NATO, and received support from Slovaks on social media. Moreover, Smer advocates stability, order and social security. Fico also said he was concerned about the increase in the number of migrants heading to Western Europe via Slovakia.
Fico was forced to resign as prime minister after the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak in 2018. He is expected to start coalition talks to form the next government as soon as possible.
