Khaled Al Qayisi was (almost) released from prison by Israel

Good news came to Italian-Palestinian young Khalid El Qaisi, who was arrested without reason in Israel on August 31, while he was preparing to return home with his wife and son after the holiday he spent in his hometown, Bethlehem. A language student at Sapienza University in Rome and co-founder of the university’s Palestine Documentation Center has been released from prison. A court in Rishon le Tzion agreed, on the condition that he remain at the disposal of the authorities for seven days and leave his passport in custody. The news was confirmed by his wife Francesca Antinucci: “He cannot leave the land for a week”, he will probably go to Bethlehem without knowing when he can return to Italy.

What happened

After a long wait during baggage and document control, Khalid was stopped, handcuffed and taken to prison by the Israeli police, under the astonished looks of his four-year-old son and his wife. There was no response to his wife’s requests for explanation, on the contrary, his wife and her son were taken to a foreign country, Jordanian territory, without a phone, cash and contact information. However, Khaled Al Qaisi was kept in prison for a month without formal charges.

It is stated that the arrest may have been due to a chance meeting with old friends who were considered “inappropriate”. Repression of students, intellectuals, or ordinary citizens who are active in promoting the culture and rights of the Palestinian people is nothing new. Khalid is a translator and student of eastern languages and civilizations at La Sapienza University of Rome. “He is respected for his passionate commitment to the collection, dissemination and translation of Palestinian historical materials”. The student is among the founders of the Palestine Documentation Center, an association that aims to promote Palestinian culture in Italy. Since his arrest, there have been four hearings without any charges. Most recently, on September 21, the period of precautionary detention was extended until October 1, the day of his release.

He will not be able to leave Israel until October 8

The seven days set by the Israeli court, which will end on October 8, are linked to the investigation authorities’ ongoing investigations into his account. Al Qaisi will be able to move freely but will not be able to leave the country.

“We are happy to see the release of Italian and Palestinian researcher Khaled Al Qaisi, following his shocking arrest by Israeli police in front of his wife and 4-year-old son at the Allemby border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan. Democratic Party MP and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the World Chamber for Human Rights After a month of detention in an Israeli prison without formal charges and hours of interrogations without a lawyer, Laura Boldrini once again stated: Khalid, who has filed a criminal complaint, has had his passport confiscated and will have to remain under house arrest for a week. Based on what signs of crime 30 “If nothing emerges within the day to bring him to court, he should be released completely and his passport will be returned.”
