The provisional death toll is at least 10 dead, 20 missing and an unknown number of injured: The ceiling of a church collapsed in the northeastern Mexican coastal city of Ciudad Madero. Other people were trapped in the Santa Cruz neighborhood, where a baptism was about to be celebrated at the time of the collapse, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
According to local media, the confirmed victims include five women, two men and three children, one of whom is one year old. There were approximately eighty people in the church at the time of the disaster.
The accident, which is thought to be probably caused by a structural malfunction, occurred at 14.18 local time on Sunday. According to the local newspaper, Tamaulipas State’s health minister, traumatologist Vicente Joel Hernandez Navarro MilenioHe said at least 39 people were transported to various hospitals in the area.
“We are living in a very difficult time,” José Armando Alvarez Cano, bishop of the Tampico diocese to which the Santa Cruz church belongs, said in a video posted on social media. “Currently, necessary efforts are being made to rescue those trapped under the rubble. May God help you.”
