They were supposed to close in January 2022, but they remained open despite the City’s instructions. At least until Sunday morning, when a devastating fire destroyed them and killed 13 people. This was revealed in the investigation launched by the Spanish police into three nightclubs that burned down in Murcia, Spain.
Murcia’s Urban Planning councilor Antonio Navarro announced at a press conference that two of these venues, La Fonda and Teatre, run by the same company, were not compliant. According to Navarro, the company had carried out work in June 2019 that led to the division of the building into two nightclubs: La Fonda and Teatre, which have been operating since 2008 and are equipped with a license.
However, the division was not accepted by the municipal government and neither venue was given the green light to welcome the public. In January 2022, the Municipality clearly stated in a regulation that the operations of both structures were suspended. The company appealed, but this appeal was rejected in March 2022. By law, both venues were required to close their doors, but despite this, their owners continued to hold special events, such as birthday parties, the night between Saturday and Sunday. This turned into a tragedy.
Management is investigating to identify any internal responsibility: According to Abc.es, an inspector was sent last October to verify that the discos were complying with the closure order. Apparently something went wrong with the controls.
Meanwhile, sources at the Supreme Court of Justice of Murcia reported that five of the 13 dead people have been identified. The condition of the bodies, which were severely damaged in the fire, makes identification difficult. Forensic medicine was only able to obtain the fingerprints of four of them, and the search for two of them is still continuing. The causes of the fire are not yet clear.
