Italy takes over the patronage of the reconstruction of Odessa

Italy officially took over the patronage of the reconstruction of the historic center of Odessa, which had been severely damaged by the Russian army.

The relevant statement on this issue was signed in Kiev by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani. The minister said that his country wants to play a leading role in the reconstruction of Ukraine, especially the Odessa metropolis. – We want to provide our Ukrainian friends with the best expertise and leading achievements of our country in the field of reconstruction, Tajani said.

In July, Russian missiles destroyed, among other things, the Orthodox cathedral, and part of the temple roof collapsed. Archaeology, literature and maritime museums were also severely damaged. UNESCO condemned Russian air strikes on the World Heritage-listed ancient city of Odessa.

Ukrainian losses

From the start of a full-scale war by Russia in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 to July 26 this year. the invaders destroyed 274 spiritual and cultural objects in this country – according to a report presented today by UNESCO.

Nearly half of this number (117) consists of religious buildings, and the list of destruction includes 27 museums, 98 buildings of historical and/or cultural value, 19 monuments, 12 libraries and 1 archive.

Presenting its document, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recalled that it, together with its partner institutions, is developing a mechanism for the independent and coordinated assessment of data from Ukraine, including: analysis of satellite images. This is in accordance with the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Values ​​in Armed Conflict.

The UNESCO report shows that the most losses in cultural property were recorded in the following oblasts: Donetsk – 78, Kharkiv – 55, Kiev – 38, Luhansk – 33 and Chernihiv – 17. The following regions suffered less damage: Sumy and Zaporizhia – 12 damaged objects each, Mykolaiv and Odessa – 8 each, Kherson – 6, Zhytomyr – 3, Vinnytsia – 2, and Dnipropetrovsk and Lviv – one each.
