A few days before Azerbaijan launched a military operation to remove Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia’s influence once and for all, a secret meeting was held between senior officials of the USA and the EU on the one hand, and Russia on the other. After the war in Ukraine, diplomatic contact between the West and Moscow is now rare. And in this particular case, it did not lead to consequences. At least according to Politico.
According to the Brussels newspaper, the meeting took place in Turkey on September 17. The issue on the table was that Azerbaijan should be pressured to get humanitarian aid to 100,000 Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians who have been deprived of Yerevan supplies for nine months due to Azerbaijan’s military blockade. It is well known how things went then: a few days later, the Baku army launched an attack on the area, forcing the Armenian people to flee.
This move by Azerbaijan did not cause any reaction from the USA and the EU. Today, Baku is becoming an increasingly important supplier of gas and oil to Europe, especially Italy. And recently it strengthened its trade agreement with Russia. Armenia, once under the protection of Moscow, accused the Kremlin of supporting the Azerbaijani military operation by not complying with tripartite agreements signed in 2020. Yerevan fears that Azerbaijan may now continue to show force. France also came to its support in the last hours, announcing that it would send military aid to the Armenian army to “defense itself”.
