He was sentenced to death for raping and murdering a six-year-old girl. The Tripura special court handed down the maximum sentence to two accused who were held responsible for the horrific violence that took place in India in 2019. Last October 3, in addition to the death sentence for sexual assault and murder, Judge Angshuman Debbarma of the Protection of Minors from Sexual Offenses Court (POCSO) imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the two men. The two people sentenced to death are two teenagers: 19-year-old Saurabh Chandranath and Dibakar Das, a year older than him, prosecutor Sudarshan Sharma said.
The date of the brutal attack dates back to 2019. The 6-year-old girl, who disappeared four years ago on May 17, was found lifeless the next day by Dharam Nagar police, who started the search upon her mother’s complaint. The little girl’s body was found in a tea plantation in Haflong, a few kilometers from her home. At the end of the investigation, Indian police arrested two young people who were neighbors of the victim: The suspects allegedly kidnapped the little girl, raped her, and then killed her.
On November 28, 2019, after a lengthy investigation and 41 witnesses, the two persons were convicted under Sections 363, 376, 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act. As the judges explained, the reason for the decision to impose the death penalty was “the brutal nature of the crime committed.”
