The United States has supplied Ukraine with more than a million pieces of Iranian ammunition confiscated in the Gulf late last year. The transfer followed a seizure case prosecuted by the Washington Department of Justice of a Yemen-bound shipment from Houthi forces, in violation of a United Nations arms embargo. “With this arms transfer, the Justice Department’s confiscation actions against one authoritarian regime now directly support the Ukrainian people’s struggle against another authoritarian regime. We will continue to use all legal authorities at our disposal to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom, democracy and the rule of law,” announced US Attorney General Judge Merrick Garland.
However, the legal framework within which the US will transfer weapons seized in Tehran to Kiev is still unclear, as UN rules require that seized weapons be destroyed or kept in warehouses. And therefore, he is not used to fighting in the war against Vladimir Putin’s Russia. After the cluster bombs, a new front of US aid to Ukraine opens.
