It’s a turnaround that could prove very costly given the next elections. Before the 2020 elections, Biden announced that the wall that Donald Trump built on the Mexican border to prevent the massive migration flow was “not a solution and he will not build another meter of wall.” Today, the Biden administration is retracting its steps and giving the green light to continue the construction of the 32 km wall in South Texas, where border crossings between Mexico and the USA are busy.
The American president justified himself by stating that he used the funds allocated and planned for the construction of the wall in 2019, but this is a motivation that does not fully convince neither the left of his party, nor the Republicans, nor even environmental groups. The latter complain about violations of important federal laws such as the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, and above all, the impact on the ecosystem.
Donald Trump’s comment was sarcastic: On Fox News, the former president commented, “Biden proves us right, he does everything we do,” jokingly mentioning how he first condemned all of the democratic leader’s immigration initiatives and then reintroduced them.
And the numbers speak of record flows: In September, nearly 245 thousand migrants from Mexico crossed the US border from the Rio Grande region; This is an unprecedented figure.
Figures that have also forced some in the Biden administration to make counter moves: “There is an immediate and urgent need to build physical barriers near the US border at project sites to prevent illegal entry into the US at this time,” said Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security. And tensions remain high. Protests also broke out in New York in mid-September during a Democratic press conference on the issue.
Now Biden’s move is expected to cause great controversy. And put the immigration issue at the center of the next election agenda.
