Russia will use nuclear weapons only if there is a threat of destruction of the country or as part of a retaliatory attack, in accordance with military doctrine, Vladimir Putin said.
At a meeting of the Valdai Club, Putin explained that the military doctrine of the Russian Federation contains only two principles supporting the possibility of using nuclear weapons and that in his opinion this threshold does not need to be lowered. – I don’t see any need for that – he added.
According to him, there is currently no situation that would threaten the survival of the Russian state. Putin believes that no one will use nuclear weapons against Russia because the potential enemy will have “no chance of survival.”
He also suggested that Moscow could withdraw its ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. He also confirmed that Russia had tested the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and had nearly completed development of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, each capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads.
Russia carried out a nuclear attack on Ukraine. Putin drew a conclusion
Early February this year. At the request of the president, the Russian army simulated the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, after which Vladimir Putin is said to have declared that a nuclear attack was not profitable. The Financial Times reported this, citing two sources close to the Kremlin.
We are talking about command and staff exercises – de facto a simulation of a nuclear attack, which allows us to assess the consequences and effect of such a step.
According to FT sources, after the simulation, Putin concluded that even a limited nuclear attack would not give him any military advantage. “There is no reason to press the button,” said a former Russian official quoted in the publication.
– Why bomb Ukraine? For example, you detonate a tactical nuclear warhead in Zaporozhye. Everything is completely contaminated with radiation, you can’t go there. And it is believed that this is Russian territory. So what’s the point? – the Financial Times interlocutor wondered.
Kremlin nuclear threats
According to experts, Moscow has about 2,000. payload of tactical nuclear weapons that can be delivered by air, sea or land and used on the battlefield.
Some military analysts believe there is a serious danger that Putin will use nuclear weapons when he finally begins to lose the war or when Ukraine is about to retake Crimea.
In April, Putin announced that Russian tactical nuclear weapons would be deployed in Belarus. He referred to the actions of the United States and its nuclear warheads stored on the territory of Western European countries.
