Ukraine suspends its complaint against Poland, Slovakia and Hungary at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Ukrainian Deputy Economy Minister Taras Kaczka said Ukraine has suspended its WTO complaint against Poland, Slovakia and Hungary.
“We see that the problem will be resolved in the coming weeks. While we look for a practical solution, our WTO disputes are on hold for the time being,” Kaczka said during his visit to Brussels on Thursday. His statement is quoted by the American agency Reuters.
Complaint to the WTO
September 15 this year The European Commission decided not to extend the embargo on Ukrainian grain and agricultural products, while Minister of Development and Technology Waldemar Buda subsequently signed a regulation on the ban on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine “due to the erroneous decision of the European Commission not to do that.” to extend the AU grain embargo.”
The regulation came into effect at midnight on September 16. In response, Ukrainian authorities filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Poland (as well as Hungary and Slovakia, which, like Poland, maintained an embargo on Ukrainian agricultural products).
Ukraine sets conditions for Poland
Kaczka spoke at the end of September about the possible withdrawal of the complaint. In an interview with the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade of Ukraine Taras Kaczka said that the Ukrainian government may withdraw the complaint against Poland to the World Trade Organization, indicating a condition.
– It is very important for us that Poland, other countries and the European Union guarantee that in the future there will be no restrictions such as the grain embargo, because they are illegal and inadequate, the politician said. – Only when we get a guarantee will we officially announce to the whole world that this dispute is over, he added.
– Neither Poland, Hungary nor Slovakia had the right to impose unilateral restrictions, neither in April nor now. We warned about the possible lawsuit before April and that’s why we did what we warned about from the beginning, Kaczka said.
