There are new media findings about the Wagner group uprising. The Wagner team ordered satellite photos from a Chinese company.
The French news agency AFP revealed that a month before the uprising, the Wagner group had ordered satellite photos of Russian territory from the border with Ukraine to Moscow from a Chinese company.
According to media reports, Beijing Yunze Technology sold two high-resolution observation satellites of Chinese aerospace group Chang Guang Satellite Technology (CGST) to Nika-Frut in November 2022. The Nika-Frut company belonged to the head of the Wagnerites, Yevgeny Prigozhin. The cost of the satellites and related services was 235 million yuan (about $30 million).
Interestingly, classified Pentagon documents showed that China earlier this year ignored the Wagner Group’s request to supply it with weapons needed for the war with Ukraine.
The Wagner Group Rebellion
Recall that at the end of June Prigozhin organized a military uprising and sent a column of mercenaries to Moscow. Ultimately, the head of the Wagner team reached an agreement with the Kremlin and halted the operation, and Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that the mercenaries who “stopped at the last line” should sign contracts with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation or would go to Belarus.
On August 23, an Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft from Prigozhin’s company, flying from Moscow to St. Petersburg, crashed in Tver Oblast. On board the machine were the founder of the Wagner Group, his deputy and head of security Valery Chekalov, as well as the commander of the formation Dmitry Utkin and several mercenaries. All passengers and three crew members (10 people in total) were killed.
On August 27, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation completed DNA testing of the disaster victims. All bodies were identified, including Prigozhin’s. The causes of the crash are still being explained by Russian prosecutors, but there are mainly two hypotheses: the plane was shot down by the S-300 anti-aircraft system and the explosion of a bomb on board.
