Israel under attack. More than 100 people were killed as a result of the Hamas offensive from the Gaza Strip against the Jewish State, launched on Saturday, October 7. The injured, according to medical sources who updated the casualty bulletin, are more than 900. Fifty Israelis are being held hostage by Hamas militiamen, as local media claim. For many analysts it is the beginning of a real war.
The surprise attack was launched by the Islamic group Hamas by land, sea and air from Gaza. An unprecedented armed conflict that has caught Israel completely off guard, with hospitals now on high alert due to the continuous arrival of wounded. An attack never seen before, says the BBC: “It is difficult to describe how unprecedented it is, not only is it the worst intelligence failure since the Yom Kippur War (and it is no coincidence that it happened almost on the same day as 50 years ago ), but Israel rarely loses control of its cities (…). The scenes in Sderot and other communities near the Gaza Strip, with armed Palestinian men roaming freely, kidnapping and killing civilians, are a shock to Israel”, he notes the BBC, which predicts an “inevitable response from Israel”. Which arrived with dozens of planes over Gaza that “hit 17 military complexes and 4 operational command centers belonging to the terrorist organization Hamas” in the Strip. The number is 198 dead and at least 1,600 injured, including at least twenty militiamen. Hospitals in the Palestinian Strip are also on alert in the face of continued attacks by Israel, which called its retaliatory military operation “Iron Swords”.
“Citizens of Israel, we are at war. It is not an operation, it is not an escalation: it is a war”, says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “This morning Hamas made a serious mistake and started a war against the State of Israel,” said Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in statements published by the Times of Israel. “IDF soldiers are fighting the enemy at every point where he has infiltrated – he adds – The State of Israel will win this war”. President Joe Biden called Netanyahu to assure him that the United States supports Israel and its right to defense.
