More than 2 thousand people died and more than 9 thousand people were injured due to the devastating earthquake that hit Afghanistan. According to officials, six villages were completely destroyed and hundreds of civilians were buried under the rubble.
The epicenter of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, 42 kilometers northwest of Herat city, where 272 thousand people live.
Qatar-based Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen told Al Jazeera that many people were missing and rescue operations were ongoing to save people trapped under the rubble. Shaheen said that there was an urgent need for tents, medicine and food in the areas affected by the disaster.
In Herat on Sunday, some people climbed over rocks and rubble and tried to pull out the dead and injured with their hands. Survivors and victims were trapped beneath collapsed buildings, their faces gray with dust. A video shared online shows people rescuing a little girl who was buried up to her neck in debris from a collapsed building. A hand can be seen cradling the little girl as rescuers lift her from the ground. Rescuers said she was the child’s mother. It is not yet known whether the mother survived.
