There are also 1,000 Italian soldiers in the IDF, the Israeli armed forces currently fighting against Hamas. This was announced by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
Tajani explained, “There are 18 thousand Italians in Israel, 1000 of them are in the Israeli army, doing military service.” The minister added that these were “people who live in Israel, belong to the Jewish religion, but also have passports”: Why are they in the ranks of the IDF?
Tajani did not give details, but it is possible that some of them were so-called “lone soldiers.” The IDF has long established a special recruitment program for them. These are soldiers who do not have family in Israel to support them: a new immigrant, a volunteer from abroad, an orphan, or an individual from a destroyed home. As of June 2022, the IDF reported more than 7,000 lone soldiers among its troops, half of whom came from abroad.
The salary of a lone soldier is usually higher than that of a regular soldier, and this is because the recruitment program provides special benefits for accommodation, meals and medical expenses.
