The world is holding its breath because of the war in the Middle East. The conflict, which broke out with Hamas’ attack on Israel, could gradually involve other actors in the war and, therefore, upset the balance already threatened by the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The operation launched by the Palestinian political and paramilitary organization was conceived both by land and by air. In addition to the rockets, the presence of militiamen who entered Israeli territory was also reported. Analysts have identified many similarities with the 1973 Yom Kippur War. But how did Tel Aviv decide to respond tactically? An article in Corriere della Sera explains that Israel has prepared “a siege to strangle Gaza accompanied by incessant bombing.” But not only. Prime Minister Netanyahu also thought about a possible ground operation, so much so that he told US President Joe Biden: we have to go in. And so he mobilized 300,000 men, deployed from the border with Lebanon to the south. According to the newspaper, the extremists, although aware of triggering a response from the affected State, “underestimated the extent of the retaliation”.
But we understand what Israel’s strategy is and what measures are planned to take down Gaza. “The first phase involves a cycle of raids with fighters and naval units to neutralize command centers, depots and centers. It takes time: Hamas knows the enemy, has bunkers and tunnels, has dispersed the leadership to be able to withstand repeated blows, years of war prepared him for difficult moments. But this time the hammer seems devastating, striking day and night, despite there being a risk of also involving the dozens of hostages, torn apart by bombs or massacred by their captors”, it reads. The second phase, however, will consist of more targeted action, dedicated to exploration with fighters, drones and planes. The target? Find leaders. Finally, phase three “envisages an assault on multiple fronts. With tanks and armored vehicles that could advance from the north, at the same time a second “column” would have to cut the Strip in half with a maneuver at the height of Kissufim” . To dismantle defenses and reduce the threat of “pieces” (rockets, mortars) that “cover” at short/medium range. Armored vehicles will have to be accompanied by infantry to deflect ambushes, confront opponents in tunnels, and conquer houses in neighborhoods.”
