China calls on Israel to end its use of collective responsibility against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the Hamas attack.
“Israel’s actions go beyond the scope of self-defense. The Israeli government must stop exercising collective responsibility towards Gaza,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, as quoted by the South China Morning Post on Sunday. This is Beijing’s first strong statement on the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
China responds
Beijing accuses Israel of using excessive force against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. According to the Middle Kingdom’s political leadership, Tel Aviv must end the “collective punishment” of Gaza’s civilian population using actions that go beyond self-defense.
Wang Yi said Israel’s actions would increase regional tensions and lead to a humanitarian disaster. The Chinese politician also condemned the Israeli retaliation in a telephone conversation with his Saudi Arabian colleague.
The South China Morning Post notes that Iranian authorities are also making threats about the possible expansion of the war in the event of an invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israeli forces.
The situation of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip
The Israeli side has amassed significant forces on the Gaza border, including tanks and special forces. According to US press reports, Israel planned to launch a land invasion of the Gaza Strip this weekend, but postponed it due to unfavorable weather conditions for aviation.
At the same time, an unprecedented evacuation of Palestinians from the northern part of the Gaza Strip is underway. The Israeli army on Saturday demanded that one million people flee at 3 p.m. (4 p.m. Polish time). This period was later extended.
The UN firmly states that Israel’s actions are “incompatible with the laws of war and the fundamental principles of humanity.” UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric noted that carrying out an “evacuation” is “impossible” without leading to “devastating humanitarian consequences.”
More than two million people live in an area much smaller than Warsaw. The length of the Gaza Strip is 40 km, the width about 10 km and the total area is 360 km².
In turn, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a speech on Saturday. The politician announced the continuation of the war and the destruction of Hamas. – We assure you that the war will continue. More and more weapons and ammunition are coming to Israel. We will destroy Hamas and win, Netanyahu declared in a televised speech shortly after the start of Shabbat. – We will never forgive or forget the atrocities committed by our enemies – he said.
Hamas attack, Israeli retaliation
Sunday is the ninth day of the war between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli army has carried out airstrikes on Gaza’s main highway over the past 24 hours, killing dozens of evacuated civilians and wounding more than 200.
According to the latest information, at least 2,200 Palestinians have been murdered in the Gaza Strip, including more than 600 children. Tel Aviv says 1,300 Israelis have lost their lives, most of them civilians killed by Hamas terrorists last Saturday, on the first day of the escalation.
Hamas is a political party, but at the same time a radical Islamic organization that administers the Gaza Strip and whose main goal is the liberation of Palestine from Israeli occupation. The armed branch of Hamas is the al-Qassam Brigades. They carried out an attack on Israeli territory last Saturday, killing more than a thousand people and, according to the IDF, kidnapping at least 120 hostages. These people are most likely being held in Gaza’s extensive network of underground tunnels.
