There are hundreds of videos and photos circulating online about the explosion at Al-Ahli Arabi Baptist Hospital in Gaza; Most cannot be shown. In one of the videos, we see a young mother lying on the ground covered in blood: her eyes wander around the vortex of chaos and despair, looking for something to hold on to. There is his little daughter crying next to him; shrill scream: can’t understand, can’t scream. The injured mother gathers the little strength she has left, a light wind pulls her towards herself, tries to calm her down by placing a kiss on her cheek, but fails to relax her lips. A kiss as cold as stone. We don’t know if he survived or not.
There are hundreds of deaths in hospitals. Some say 500, some say 100: Nothing changes, a terrible massacre of defenseless lives. Israeli bombing is not blamed, instead the Hamas rocket is blamed. The only thing that is certain at the moment is that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s spokesman, Hananya Naftali, claimed responsibility for the attack on X, referring to the hospital as a “terrorist base”; The ‘tweet’ was later quickly removed.
Generals, soldiers, airmen or terrorists, identical dealers of death: look into those motherly eyes again and again, try to feel her lost, suffering soul. Try the thread of humanity hidden under the veil of hatred and obedience: No one – wrote Susan Sontag – can both think and hit another living being.
