Argentina elects new president

More than 35 million Argentines will be called to the polls on Sunday, October 22 to elect the next president, who will remain in office until December 2027. In parallel, a new composition of the Congress will be determined, which will be partially renewed with 24 members. Senators and 130 deputies representing eight provinces.

The presidential race is being decided between five candidates, even if only three have a real chance: ultraliberal Javier Milei of La Libertad Avanza (Lla), progressive Peronist Sergio Massa of Union por la Patria (Uxp), and conservative Patricia Bullrich of Juntos. by elcambia (Jxc).

The contest for Casa Rosada is still ongoing and polls show the gap between the three candidates is narrow. The general primary elections in August, in which 69% of the voters participated and Milei took first place with 29.86%, seem to be the breaking point for most of the undecided and non-participants.

In order to become president in the first round, you need to score 45%, that is, 40%, a 10% difference from the second round. A possible second round election is planned for November 19. The winner will assume the presidency on December 10. That day will mark 40 years since the return of democracy with the inauguration of Raul Alfonsin as president of Argentina in 1983.

In addition, 19 Mercosur parliamentarians for the national constituency and 24 MPs for the regional constituency will need to vote. We also vote for the governor of the autonomous city of Buenos Aires (the capital of Argentina) and the populous province of Buenos Aires (largest electoral slate with 13,110,768 voters, 37.04%), Catamarca and Entre Ríos.

In the last elections in 2019, progressive Peronist Alberto Fernández (Frente de Todos) was elected president with 80.4% turnout.
