Potential disaster in European seas. Two cargo ships collided in the early hours of this morning in the North Sea, off the coast of Germany, and several people are missing. The German Central Command for Maritime Emergencies reports that the ships involved are the Polesie and the Verity, which collided around 22 kilometers southwest of the German island of Heligoland. It appears that one of the ships, the British-flagged Verity, even sank.
The emergency command then specified that one person was rescued from the water and is receiving medical treatment, while rescue teams search for other missing people. The ship departed from Bremen, Germany, bound for the English port of Immingham. The other ship, the Bahamas-flagged Polesie, remained afloat with 22 people on board. Several ships and a helicopter from the German Navy are engaged in the search, even though the weather conditions do not help rescuers: a force six wind is blowing on the Beaufort scale (which is 17 degrees) and there are waves three meters high.
