Israel called on Russia to expel a Palestinian Hamas delegation visiting Moscow. The Kremlin responds.
On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that a Hamas delegation was in Moscow. At the same time, senior Hamas member Abu Marzook was expected to meet with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister as part of the visit.
Hamas delegation in Russia
Russian news agency TASS reported that Marzouk and Iranian Deputy Minister Ali Kani raised issues related to a ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister reaffirmed Tehran’s strong support for the Palestinian cause.
In turn, Zakharova spoke of the need for a quick ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian corridors for evacuation and delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. She also appealed to Hamas to release the held hostages. Moscow is also demanding an increase in the number of humanitarian aid supplies for the Palestinians.
Israel appeals to Moscow
The visit of the Hamas delegation to Moscow was condemned by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, pointing out that such an invitation was “indecent” and “deplorable”. Israel’s Foreign Ministry called for the immediate expulsion of Hamas representatives, saying it is a “terrorist organization worse than ISIS.”
The Russian embassy in Israel responded by calling attempts to accuse Moscow of supporting terrorism “unacceptable.” Moscow indicated that it is necessary to maintain relations with all parties to the conflict.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Hamas representatives spoke with Russian diplomatic officials but not with President Putin or Kremlin officials.
