US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Community summit.
The information was reported by the AP agency. The APEC summit will take place in San Francisco in November. A US official familiar with the meeting’s agenda told media the parties reached an “agreement in principle” to hold a meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit. The exact meeting date and details have not yet been agreed.
Information about the likelihood of such a meeting was published by The Washington Post on October 6. Beijing has not yet officially confirmed that Xi Jinping will personally attend the APEC summit in San Francisco. The event takes place from November 11 to 17.
US-China Relations
On Friday, President Joe Biden met with Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Minister and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Communist Party of China. Earlier, China’s top diplomat also met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
The meetings were the latest in a series of high-level contacts between the United States and China aimed at stabilizing troubled relations between the two countries over the Taiwan issue, China’s aggressive maritime activities, the downing of a Chinese balloon over American territory, and concerns about China’s role in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Asia-Pacific Economic Community
APEC, or the Asia-Pacific Economic Community, is a loose integration agreement concerning economic cooperation among countries in Asia and the Pacific Rim, established in 1989 in Canberra at an informal meeting of six ASEAN member states and Australia, New Zealand, Canada , the US, Japan and South Korea.
The APEC Secretariat was established in 1993 and is located in Singapore. The APEC Summit has been held annually since 1993.
