Two Welsh chip shops are in the top 10 UK chip shops. Shipdeck in Caerphilly and Finney’s Ynys Mon have been shortlisted in the Field to Frier category for the National Fish and Chip Awards 2024.
Shipdeck was also selected last year, so WalesOnline tried to see what all the fuss was about. And North Wales Live’s Thomas Lewis revealed that the Anglesey chippy, as well as its sister shop in nearby Benlech, have also featured in similar awards in recent years.
The North Wales restaurant has received overwhelmingly positive reviews online, with several customers noting that they regularly make the two-hour return journey to try the award-winning fish and chips. Trade magazine Frier’s Review said: “The UK’s fish and chip shops demonstrate excellence in their knowledge of potatoes and in the care and preparation of chips necessary to ensure high quality standards. The industry jury evaluated and narrowed down the candidates to the top 10.”
Andrew Crook, chairman of the National Fish Fryers Federation, which organized the awards, said: “We can all relate to the joyous moment of taking our first bite of chips fresh from the fryer. The amount of skill required to achieve the perfect balance of textures, uniform color and brightest flavor cannot be underestimated.
“The Field to Frier Award is a great opportunity to congratulate companies on their success. “Lots of entries came in following the annual open day on the Isle of Ely, where participants learn a lot about selecting, storing and roasting potatoes, so we are delighted to see so many entries selected from across the country.”
