A terrible traffic accident in Egypt. A violent collision between a bus and several cars killed at least 32 people and injured 57 people. The incident occurred on October 28 in Al Behera province in the Nile Delta, on the highway connecting Cairo to Alexandria, Egypt.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the accident occurred due to a fuel leak, which caused the bus to collide with “many” vehicles. While some vehicles caught fire after the collision, many people could not escape the flames. While nearly 20 ambulances went to the scene of the accident to help the injured, a team from the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office intervened and investigated the incident.
Traffic Department teams are working to facilitate the access of more ambulances and the resumption of traffic by clearing the 134th kilometer of the highway towards Cairo. Images shared on social networks showed more than a dozen vehicles burned, some burned, and dozens of bloodied people in the middle of this highway, one of Egypt’s most important highways.
In the country, traffic accidents are frequent due to high speeds and poor road conditions, as well as failure to comply with road rules because passengers often do not wear seat belts.
According to CAPMAS, Egypt’s official statistics agency, traffic accidents caused 7,101 deaths across the country in 2021. This figure increased by 15.2 percent compared to the 6,164 deaths recorded a year ago.
