Thousands plunder UN refugee camps in Gaza

Thousands of people stormed warehouses and distribution centers of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA) in the central and southern Gaza Strip, which is controlled by the Islamist group Hamas. They took the supplies stored there, the humanitarian organization reported on Sunday.

He explained that these people had taken wheat flour and other “survival items” such as hygiene kits, and that one of the warehouses raided in Deir al Balah, in the center of the Gaza Strip, contained supplies that had arrived in humanitarian convoys from the Gaza Strip . Egypt.

The announcement was made by UNRWA Director of Gaza Affairs Thomas White in a statement: “This is a worrying sign that civil order is collapsing.” after three weeks of war and a rigorous siege in Gaza.”

“People are scared, frustrated and desperate. Tension and anxiety are increasing as telephone and internet communications are cut off. “They feel lonely, isolated from their families in Gaza and around the world,” he lamented.

In its note, UNRWA emphasizes that the mass movement of people from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip has put “enormous pressure” on communities in the southern part. This puts further pressure on already deteriorating public services.

According to the agency, about 80 trucks carrying humanitarian aid have so far entered the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt.

However, this help is not enough when you consider that before the war, hundreds of emergency trucks passed by every day.

UNRWA is currently handling the receipt and storage of this aid in the Palestinian enclave and said convoys could not enter on Saturday due to telecommunications disruption.

Palestinian telecommunications company Jawwal announced on Sunday that internet and telephone connections in Gaza are being gradually restored after they were disrupted on Friday by the Israeli army’s expansion of ground operations.

Israel and Hamas have been at war since October 7, after the Palestinian Islamist group attacked Israeli territory, killing 1,400, wounding around 5,000 and transferring 230 hostages to Gaza.

Since then, Israel has been bombing Gaza in retaliation. and since Friday the Gaza Strip has been under attack with tanks, killing more than 7,700 Palestinians and wounding almost 19,000.
