Lukashenko tries to mediate war in Ukraine: “Let’s sit down and negotiate”

Russia and Ukraine are in a “serious stalemate” and the two sides need to sit down and negotiate an end to the conflict. This is an invitation from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, an ally of Russia’s Vladimir Putin, to the 600th day of the war in Ukraine. “There are enough problems on both sides, and in general the situation is now in a serious stalemate: no one can do anything to strengthen or advance their position,” Lukashenko said.

The Belarusian president, who used his country’s territory as a springboard for Putin’s all-out invasion of Ukraine in 2022, said that Ukraine’s demands for secession from Russia’s territory should be resolved at the negotiation table without causing any loss of life. The Belarusian leader, who met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Minsk on October 28, added, “They are entrenched there head-on. People are dying. We must sit at the negotiating table and find an agreement.” A meeting that allowed the Belarusian president to reveal his intention to have a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Putin soon.

The situation on the battlefield is alarming. The number of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict yesterday approached 300 thousand, the chief of staff of the Kiev Armed Forces wrote on Facebook. Since February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, Moscow has lost 299,080 soldiers, 660 of whom died yesterday. Additionally, according to the army report, Ukrainian troops have so far destroyed 5,175 enemy tanks, 7,188 artillery systems, 558 air defense systems, 320 aircraft, 324 helicopters, 5,399 unmanned aerial vehicles, 1,544 cruise missiles, 20 ships and boats, and one submarine.

Moscow has lost more than 6,500 soldiers since October 10, when the Russian offensive began near Avdiivka. According to Tauride Defense Forces spokesman Alexander Shtupun, Kiev also destroyed 100 tanks and about 250 units of other enemy armored vehicles in the same sector. On the last day alone, five Russian tanks, including the T-90, were destroyed in the Avdiivka area. According to Shtupun, Moscow deployed around 40,000 soldiers in total near Avdiivka.
