From today (Monday 30th October), the sale of various single-use plastics is banned in Wales. The Welsh Government has introduced this new law to reduce the flow of plastic pollution into our environment by banning the supply of certain single-use plastic products.

Climate Change Minister Julie James said: “This is the first step towards phasing out the need to use and sell unnecessary single-use plastic in Wales. We are committed to eradicating single-use plastic and our next step will be a ban on single-use plastic bags, polystyrene cup lids and food containers, and products made from oxo-degradable plastics, which will come into force at the end of the year. from the term Senedd.

“Many businesses in Wales have already adapted to the ban by switching to reusable products or replacing their plastic with card or paper when reusables are not suitable. We are also looking at plastic-based wet wipes, which can block drains, contribute to flooding and add microplastic fibers to our environment.

Plaid Cymru welcomed the restrictions. Delith Jewell, Plaid Cymru climate change spokesperson, said: “We want future generations to inherit a cleaner Earth, so it is vital that we change our dependence on plastic, which is choking our land and even our get into our blood.
