Israeli attack on a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. ‘Hundreds dead and injured’

A powerful explosion occurred in a refugee camp in the city of Jabaliya in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. Authorities report ‘hundreds of dead and injured’.

Israeli army spokesman Richard Hecht admitted that an attack on the camp had taken place. He said there was a very senior Hamas commander in this area.

Gaza’s Interior Ministry said 20 houses were “completely destroyed.” Local authorities reported “hundreds of deaths and injuries” and “many people are still under the rubble,” CNN reported.

Attacks in Gaza tunnels

The ground invasion of the Gaza Strip is underway. On Tuesday, the Israeli side announced it was beginning to fight Hamas fighters in a network of underground tunnels. Over the past 24 hours, the Israeli army has hit around 300 targets, including anti-tank positions and rocket launchers, as well as Hamas tunnels and military facilities. Israeli authorities announced they had eliminated another Hamas commander who led the October 7 attack. A statement on Telegram said the fighter was Nasim Abu Ajina, commander of Hamas’ Beit Lahia battalion.

According to media reports, the network of tunnels that Hamas has built over the years could be as long as 500 kilometers and up to 40 meters deep. Underground passageways are used to infiltrate the enemy, as well as to smuggle food, goods, people and weapons. Hamas has become adept at producing its own weapons in underground bunkers and protecting them from sophisticated Israeli tracking systems.

War in Israel

Tensions rose again in the Middle East on October 7, when militants from the radical Palestinian movement Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. Hamas said it was in response to aggressive actions by Israeli authorities against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City.

In response, Israel announced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip and began launching rocket attacks on Gaza, as well as on some districts of Lebanon and Syria.
