An area of Swansea is expected to reinstate a police presence with plans to demolish an existing building damaged by the fire and build a new police station in its place. The South Wales Police Commissioner has applied to Swansea Council for permission to demolish the fire-damaged police station building in Heol Gwyrosydd, Penlan, and construct a new two-storey building with secure parking and perimeter landscaping. .

Documents submitted as part of the planning application stated that the new building would provide an operational center for policing in Penlan and surrounding areas, adding that the new base would include social accommodation for patrol and response officers, information facilities for staff and space office for operational planning. . It will also be a hub for the public to learn about the police and a place to improve community relations.

On 23 July 2018, Judge Peter Heywood assessed £30,000 worth of damage at the police station following an incident in which a man set fire to a police car in the street. South Wales Police Chief Inspector Mark Brier said at the time that Penlan Police Station was a fully functioning police station, but the planning application said it was now a “derelict building”. Penlan police station looks set to be demolished and rebuilt

The plans say: “The new station will replace the existing derelict building and restore a presence in Penlan and with the two-storey property it will give the area a feeling of completeness rather than just being an occasional meeting point where police officers visit and then let it. The proposed building is in accordance with the finishes used elsewhere and in a similar way. The building creates a highlight on the site and at the corner joint.

“The new landscaping will be used to soften the perimeter of the site and create a positive addition to the streetscape. The new station will also be environmentally sensitive and will be aligned with the environmental policies and aspirations of South Wales Police, Swansea Council and the Welsh Government. Swansea City Council’s planning department will now consider the application. Join our WhatsApp news community here for the latest news.
