Agreement on the evacuation from the Gaza Strip. The first group of refugees is already in Egypt

On Wednesday, the first group of civilians evacuated from the Gaza Strip entered Egypt under a Qatar-brokered deal.

According to the agreement reached between Egypt, Israel and Hamas, a number of foreigners and seriously injured people will be able to leave the besieged area. According to CNN, between 450 and 500 foreigners will leave the Gaza Strip. The option to escape from the Gaza Strip will also apply to the most seriously injured Palestinians.

Egypt evacuating

Evacuees who have been stuck in Gaza since the war that started on October 7 were transported in ambulances through the Rafah border crossing, Reuters reports. A border source said these people were undergoing security checks on the Egyptian side. A Western official told Reuters that Israel and Egypt had agreed on a list of people with foreign passports who could leave Gaza. Egypt has prepared a field hospital in Sheikh Zuwayed to receive refugees. Ambulances were waiting in Rafah.

The agreement did not address other issues, such as the release of some 240 hostages held by Hamas or a cessation of fighting, which many countries have called for but which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected.

Indonesia said it tried to get 10 of its citizens out of the Gaza Strip, but three of them, hospital volunteers, decided to stay. The Philippines, Jordan and Italy also expressed hope that they could get their citizens out of the area hit by Wednesday’s Israeli attack.

Israel is still attacking Gaza

The Palestinian side says that despite the humanitarian breakthrough, Israeli warplanes, naval boats and artillery bombarded Gaza throughout the night, killing dozens of civilians. Hospitals are struggling to treat the injured due to fuel shortages.

“Israel has promised to destroy Hamas. However, the number of civilian deaths in Gaza and the dire humanitarian conditions have raised concerns around the world. Gaza is running out of food, drinking water, medicine and fuel. An Egyptian security source said earlier that up to 500 foreign passport holders will pass through the Rafah border crossing on Wednesday. The source said there were about 200 people waiting on the Palestinian side of the border. The second source indicated that not everyone was expected to arrive on Wednesday and that no schedule was given for how long the crossing would be open,” he described to Reuters.
