“We help with a lot of things.” American commandos in Israel

US commandos help locate more than 200 hostages taken during the October 7 Hamas attacks.

US Defense Department official Christopher Maier declined to comment on the size of US special operations forces currently in Israel. However, other U.S. officials say the Defense Department has deployed dozens of commandos in recent weeks.

– U.S. commandos on the ground in Israel are helping locate more than 200 hostages taken during the Oct. 7 Hamas surprise attacks, the Pentagon’s top special operations policy official said Tuesday.

– We actively help Israelis in many matters – said Christopher Maier at a conference in Washington. He said the most important task is to help Israel “identify hostages, including American hostages. This is truly our duty.”

Not just commands

The New York Times, citing anonymous officials, reports that the commandos will join the FBI, State Department and other US government specialists in recovering hostages to help the Israelis.

“US special operations forces have not been assigned a combat role in Israel, but they are in discussions with their Israeli counterparts,” Maier said.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin stressed the need to carefully consider how Israeli forces conduct a ground invasion of Gaza, as Hamas maintains a complex network of tunnels under densely populated areas.

“We will work with them as much as possible to advise them on these types of activities,” Maier said.

“Several Western countries have secretly brought small teams of their special forces closer to Israel to assist in a possible rescue of their citizens from Israel or Lebanon.” – describes “NYT”.
