“A key element”. British intelligence reports serious losses for Russia

Last week, Russia lost at least four long-range surface-to-air missile launchers due to Ukrainian attacks.

In its daily intelligence update, the British Ministry of Defense indicated that, according to media reports, three Russian S-400 Triumf (SA-21) launch vehicles were destroyed in Luhansk Oblast on October 26.

However, Ukrainian sources report further losses of Russian air defenses in Crimea.

“A key element of military strategy”

British military intelligence believes the damage shows Moscow is “unable to deal with the modern weapons” the West has used to support Ukraine during the war. “The existing situation could force Russia to weaken air defenses in its other areas,” it was reported.

“Russia has long considered comprehensive, technologically advanced, long-range surface-to-air missile systems as a key element of its military strategy,” the UK Ministry of Defense said. “The latest losses highlight that Russia’s integrated air defense system is still unable to deal with modern precision weapons and will most likely increase the already significant burden on other systems and operators. There is a real possibility that Russia, by replacing the destroyed systems in the future, Ukraine will weaken its air defenses in other operational areas,” we read the statement.

British intelligence previously indicated that Russia is likely to want to maintain stockpiles of long-range missiles for winter attacks on Ukraine. The Russian Federation has not used long-range aircraft to attack Ukraine since September 21. This is not the first time the Kremlin has taken a significant pause on using long-range missiles against Ukraine. A similar failure occurred between March and April – likely because Russia used up much of its missile stockpile last winter as it waged a campaign to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Moscow will again try to attack Ukraine’s critical infrastructure this winter.
