The Israeli Army (IDF) operates in Gaza City and surrounds it on several sides.
– We move on to the next phase of the war. Israeli forces are in the heart of northern Gaza, operating in Gaza City, surrounding the area and deepening their ground offensive, said General Herci Halewi, IDF chief of staff.
He emphasized that the forces under his command have a huge advantage, even though less than half of the Israeli forces are involved in the operation in the Gaza Strip. The rest of the army is ready if there is fighting on other fronts.
Halewi noted that Israeli soldiers operate in a densely populated urban area, which requires “professionalism and courage.” He added that 18 IDF soldiers have been killed since the start of the operation in Gaza. “We lost the best of our sons in the war,” he said.
Hamas attack and Israeli retaliation
Tensions rose again in the Middle East on October 7, when militants from the radical Palestinian movement Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. Hamas said it was in response to aggressive actions by Israeli authorities against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City.
In response, Israel announced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip and began launching rocket attacks on Gaza, as well as on some districts of Lebanon and Syria.
Israeli bombardments on the tiny Palestinian enclave of 2.3 million people killed at least 9,061 people, including 3,760 children, according to Gaza health authorities.
The drama of children in the Gaza Strip
More children have been killed in Gaza in just over three weeks than in all the world’s conflicts combined in the past three years, according to global charity Save the Children.
Israel says its airstrikes target Hamas militants’ facilities and infrastructure and accuses the country of using civilians as human shields.
