Hezbollah joins the war. He launched an attack on Israel

The Lebanese Hezbollah carried out drone attacks on Israeli army positions on Thursday. The IDF responded with aerial fire.

Hezbollah announced Thursday that it used two explosive-packed drones to attack an Israeli army command post in the disputed Sheba Farms area on the Lebanese-Israeli border.

According to Reuters sources, Hezbollah carried out simultaneous attacks on 19 different positions in northern Israel along the border with Lebanon. The source said the items included military facilities but did not provide details.

Hezbollah carried out the first such attack

Reuters notes that this is the first time Hezbollah has declared an attack on Israeli forces using these types of drones, and comes days after the Iran-backed organization first said it had used a surface-to-air missile against an Israeli drone .

In a statement, Hezbollah said drones packed with “large amounts of explosives” attacked the headquarters of an Israeli battalion in the Sheba farm area and hit their targets.

Sheba Farms is a small strip of land between the Golan Heights and the Lebanese-Syrian border. In the 1950s they were under Syrian control and after the Six-Day War in 1967 they were occupied by Israel. In 1981, the Jewish state annexed the farms. When Israel withdrew its troops from Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah announced that it was not a complete withdrawal as it had retained the Sheba Farms.

Israel’s response

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on Thursday it had attacked Hezbollah in a “broad attack”. “Warplanes and helicopters have attacked the targets of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in recent hours in response to shelling from Lebanese territory,” read a statement from the Israeli Defense Forces.

According to AFP data, after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and the conflict in the Middle East intensified, 66 people were killed on the Lebanese side, including 48 Hezbollah fighters, but also seven civilians, including a Reuters journalist.

According to the IDF, nine people were killed on the Israeli side: eight soldiers and one civilian.
