Cruise ship caught in the middle of the storm, 14-meter waves and 100 injured: “Fear of dying”

The ship is shaken by the violence of the waves, furniture and belongings are flying, and hundreds of people are screaming in panic, fearing for their life safety. The story of the passengers on the “Spirit of Discovery” ship, who found themselves in the middle of a terrible storm off the coast of France on Saturday, November 4, is like a horror movie. The cruise ship, which set off from Great Britain and headed for Spain’s Canary Islands last October 24, had to turn back to the shores of England due to bad weather conditions and encountered waves exceeding 14 meters high.

The commander decided to return according to the forecast, but the ship encountered a storm in the Bay of Biscay, where the sea is known to be wavy. The ship’s safety system was immediately activated, causing a sudden turn and stop. As noted by Saga Cruises, it is often a sudden maneuver that causes the majority of injuries. While more than 100 passengers were injured during the hours at the mercy of the waves, the situation returned to normal only as weather conditions improved.

Richard Reynolds, 60, who was aboard the “Spirit of Discovery”, told the Daily Mail of those moments of pure terror: “It was a terrible experience. It was terrible, the waves were reaching up to the windows of the ships.” On the fifth floor of the ship, people were screaming, fearing for their lives, furniture, plates and glasses were flying in all directions, hitting everything and shattering into pieces.” A nightmare story from a 60-year-old man who feared for the life of both himself and his family: “We were locked in our cabins for two days “We were lying in bed, fully dressed and with our life jackets on.”

The man harshly criticized the staff’s actions and said he was prepared to take legal action against Saga Cruises, the company responsible for organizing the trip. There were approximately 980 people on board, with an average age of 76, and they were all traumatized by this nightmare journey; Another passenger, 75-year-old Jan Bendall, confirmed: “We were on the ship for 15 hours between the storm. The older passengers were in a panic, it was terrible.”
