It looks like a scene somewhere between a horror movie and a science fiction movie, but unfortunately it’s real. A worker was crushed and killed by a robot: the machine could not distinguish him from the boxes of vegetables he was carrying. The accident occurred yesterday, Wednesday, November 8, in South Korea. According to the South Korean news agency Yonha, the machine caught the worker with its mechanical arm and pushed him towards the conveyor belt, crushing his body.
The victim was 40 years old and worked for the company that produced the robotic arm. He was checking whether the robot was working properly when the accident occurred. According to agency sources, the test was supposed to be done two days ago on November 6, but was postponed due to problems with the machines.
Going to the hospital did not help: The worker died shortly after being taken to the hospital due to his injuries. While authorities announced that an investigation would be opened into the incident, the company that used the robot arm, Dongoseong Export Agricultural Complex, called for justice and greater security.
But this is certainly not the first incident in the Southeast Asian country. A similar accident occurred last March at an automobile manufacturing plant, when a worker was trapped in machinery: fortunately, he escaped with serious treatable injuries.
The fate of a young Volkswagen worker in Frankfurt was decidedly worse: In 2015, he died in an accident when he was caught and crushed by a robotic arm similar to the one used by the Korean company.
