The plane takes off without two “windows”: the crew notices this during the flight

On an intercontinental flight, two of the plane’s windows were left without protective glass. Fortunately, it is an oversight that does not lead to serious consequences. The hero of the story was a Titan Airways plane leaving Stansted airport in London, England and heading to Florida in the United States. The plane took off on time with 11 crew and nine passengers on board, only for the captain to realize something was wrong above 14,000 feet and to turn around and return to London airport.

The facts date back to October 4, but only in the last few days have new details emerged: After checks on the plane, it was revealed that two windows were missing protective glass, while the other two windows were misaligned. The only object occupying the empty space was the scratch-resistant glass, a piece of plastic designed to prevent passengers from touching the outer glass. The crash could have had “more serious consequences”, according to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which cooperates with Britain’s Department for Transport.

At takeoff, the plane was nearly empty, with all but a few passengers sitting in the middle row. When the seat belt sign was disabled, a crew member approached a window in the rear of the vehicle and noticed that the seal that usually surrounds the windows was rattling due to the lack of glass. The captain was immediately informed of the problem and decided to return to Stansted: the aircraft had separated for about 30 minutes and had reached 14,500 feet when the absence of windows was noticed. The cockpit remained normally pressurized and no persons on board were injured, as confirmed by the AAIB.
