The incident took place in Panama; An American has been arrested after shooting and killing two people who stopped his car and other motorists passing through Central America. This action was captured on camera, which showed disturbing images. The footage shows a man with gray hair and glasses approaching the blockade on the Pan-American Highway.
While arguing with the demonstrators, the old man first waves his finger, then takes out his gun and opens fire. In subsequent images, people can be seen standing around the bodies on the road in the Chame district, west of Panama City. Finally, the scene where the armed attacker is handcuffed and put into the police car. Law enforcement later shared a photo of the suspect handcuffed to the pipe.
The old man was identified as 77-year-old Kenneth Darlington, a lawyer and professor with dual citizenship in the United States and Panama, according to Newsroom Panama and Agence France Presse. The French news agency announced that one of the protesters affected by the incident died at the scene and the other died in a local hospital. Protesters were on the highway to join a third week of protests against a major mining contract that allows Canada-based First Quantum Minerals to operate the region’s largest copper mine for at least another 20 years.
So far, the roadblocks have caused losses of up to $80 million per day to businesses operating in the region. Schools have been closed across the country for more than a week. Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo sent his condolences to the families of the dead protesters, saying such a crime “has no place” in his country’s society of solidarity. This is not the first victim in this context. Panamanian media reported last week that a protester was shot and killed by a foreigner trying to pass through a checkpoint.
