A man accused of raping a woman during a game of truth or dare says there is “no doubt” that “there was always consent.” He also denied being manipulative and having a “high estimate of himself.”
Joseph Regan, 22, from Cardiff, denies two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault by penetration, which were allegedly committed at his alleged victim’s home earlier this year. Regan allegedly convinced the woman to allow him to return home to watch Love Island, but he allegedly organized drinking games and a truth or dare game to rape her.
The trial at Cardiff Crown Court previously heard the woman told Regan: “Just so you know there is no intention” and made it clear she was not interested in anything sexual happening between them. But she claimed he forced her to have sex before turning her face down, applying his weight on her and inserting his penis into her vagina.

She said: “The moment I felt that, I was scared and I gathered all the strength I could and said, ‘Let go of me.’ I said I didn’t want to get to that point. Why did you completely ignore this?” “. The complainant said he asked Regan if that was her intention and stated that he responded, “No, that was not my intention all along. I was lucky that you lived alone and I could go back to your house. Watch Love Island with you.
She said she told him she “never wanted to see him again” and told police Regan called her a “selfish bitch” and said “I’m not done yet.” The appellant stated that he placed his private parts in front of her face and pushed her head. She then alleged that he grabbed her arm and forced her to have sex. He then left, leaving the alleged victim lying on the bed looking in the mirror.
In testimony on Thursday, Regan said he returned to the appellant’s house, where they began a game of truth or dare. Her lawyer, Kevin Seale, asked the defendant how the game unfolded. Regan said: “Teasing each other with sexual acts, kissing, licking, touching certain parts of the body.” He said both he and the complainant undressed and she touched his butt. And she added: “Yes, we both lick each other. They licked their hands. I dared to do squats, push-ups, she felt my butt, took off my pants and my sports shorts to show me her breasts.’ , and kisses too. “She dared me to kiss her for five seconds and I dared her to kiss me for longer, and it was with tongues.”
The defendant said he and the complainant went to his room, where they continued to play truth or dare. He said: “She got on top of me and we kissed while she was on top of me. “Our hands were on top of each other and on our bodies.” Regan said they dared each other to lick her inner thighs and he took off her top.
He told the court that he and the woman engaged in oral sex. Mr. Seal said, “Did you ever say you didn’t want to do this?” Regan said, “No.” The lawyer added: “Did you push her between her legs or separate them?” Regan said, “No.”
Appellant claims that Regan put her face down and vaginally raped her, but Regan denied any sexual relationship between them. He said: “She said she didn’t want to have sex that night. I said, ‘It’s okay’ and we continued kissing… I completely understand.”
He said the alleged victim performed oral sex on him for the second time. Mr. Seal said: ““Did you grab her by the head and force her onto your penis?” Regan replied, “No.” The accused was also questioned about a video he made at the complainant’s house in which she appears in her underwear asking if she was ok.
When asked why she made the video, Regan said, “Where I am now. The first video I talked to was a generic “Are you okay?” I wasn’t worried. “I saved it to my Snapchat in case there were any questions about that night.” Mr Seal said: “Did you think you had done something wrong or raped her?” Regan said, “No.”
After spending the night together, Regan said he went to her house the next day because she was playing football. She denied that the complainant was upset or crying when she left and stated that they were on good terms.
Concluding his questioning, Mr Seal said: “Do you deny any form of rape of the victim?” Regan said, “Of course, yes.” Seal said, “Any form of sexual assault against her that night?” Regan said, “Yes, I deny it.” Seal said: “Did you have any doubt that she did not give consent?” Regan said: “There was no doubt, there was always agreement.” Seal said: “Did you force her to do something against her will or try to persuade her to do something against her will?” Regan said, “No.”
During cross-examination, prosecutor Matthew Roberts asked the defendant if he was “manipulative,” “arrogant” and “had a high opinion of himself.” Reagan denied it.
Roberts said, “On a scale of zero to 10, how wise would you rate yourself?” Regan said: “That would be someone else’s perception. “I respect myself and take care of myself, I have no qualifications for myself.”
The prosecutor later said: “You are a man who has a very high opinion of himself and has been considered [the alleged victim] I was lucky to be in his company that night. Regan said, “No, sir.” The trial is ongoing.
