New official photos of the King and Queen by Anton Corbijn

Anton Corbijn has created new official portraits of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. The photographs were taken last September in the gallery hall of Noordeinde Palace.

The Government Information Service (RVD) published the photos in honor of Willem-Alexander’s ten-year rule. In the photo, he wears, among other things, the Knight Grand Cross of the Military Order of William. As king he is automatically head of the oldest and most important chivalry in the Netherlands.

This series is the first series in which Willem-Alexander can be seen with his beard, which he grew in 2019. This is the king’s third series of official photographs: the first was taken by Koos Breukel shortly before and after the inauguration in 2013, and five years later Erwin Olaf photographed the royal family at the palace on Dam Square.

Alongside the three photo series, three official state portraits created in 2014 by artists Iris van Dongen, Rineke Dijkstra and Femmy Otten were also presented. All official portraits are ceremonial works intended to represent the king’s authority, for example in ministries, courtrooms or communities. “This is not a requirement, but it is considered good practice,” writes RVD.

In addition to the official photos, RVD also posted a slightly more casual black-and-white photo of the royal couple. Corbijn’s style, which has made a name for itself with loose portraits of artists such as Herman Brood, Igggy Pop and U2 since the 1970s, is especially clearly seen in this last photograph.
