Mattarella: Hamas is not Palestine. Kiev needs mediation

Dialogue as the only possible instrument for peace. In Tashkent, in the heart of Central Asia, like a few days ago in South Korea, observing history from the 38th parallel, Sergio Mattarella looks at the “tensions” that risk breaking the world order and sets the goal. “At my age I didn’t imagine that I could witness the war in Europe”, he confides to his Uzbek counterpart, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. In these regions, even though the Soviet occupation has long since disappeared, Moscow’s influence is still strong. There is a great desire for autonomy and independence, but proximity matters.

And that’s why the Head of State seems to want to take advantage of the latitude to send clear messages: “The mistake” made by Russia is serious: “Go back in time” because today “no dispute can be resolved by attacking your neighbor”, says the tenant of Colle, reiterating what the line of our country and Europe has been since February 24, 2022. It is, therefore, necessary to encourage all ongoing mediation attempts, “which naturally respect the Ukrainian territorial integrity”, highlights Mattarella, who, however, for the first time, he goes a step further: “Nobody – he guarantees – wants to humiliate and weaken Russia’s role”.

Even in the Middle East there is an aggressor and an aggressor. “What Hamas did on October 7th, by massacring children, raping women, taking children and the elderly hostage, filming scenes of violence is an insult to humanity”, he says clearly, pointing the finger at Hamas’ “deliberate” violence, which however – it is emphasized – “does not represent the Palestinian people”. Not only. Civilian victims, both in Israel and Gaza, are all the same, he makes it clear, and “military actions must take this into account”. “I remain convinced – Mattarella insists – that the only solution that leads to stability and peace is that of two peoples and two States”.

“Only dialogue and cooperation, based on mutual respect and the inalienable value of the human person, in all its diverse manifestations – insists the Head of State when meeting with students at the Turin Polytechnic campus in Tashkent – will be able to eradicate the ghosts that imperialism resurfaces.” In front of the boys, Mattarella once again quotes Franco Battiato and his “Like a camel in the gutter”. The title of the song by the Sicilian singer and composer takes up a phrase by the Uzbek scientist Al Biruni to speak of his inadequacy in the face of the “ferocious demons” of violence. “And what do the eyes still have to see and endure?”, he recites.
