US President Joe Biden will meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for the first time in a year. High-stakes diplomacy was aimed at curbing tensions between the two world powers on Wednesday, according to senior US officials.
The meeting, which will take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Forum for Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco Bay, could last hours and involve teams of officials from Beijing and Washington.
Global issues including the Israel-Hamas war, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea’s ties with Russia, Taiwan, the Indo-Pacific, human rights, fentanyl, artificial intelligence and “fair” trade and economic relations, officials said .
“Nothing will be hidden; “Everything is on the table,” a senior Biden administration official, who declined to be named, told reporters.
“We have everything clear. We know that attempts to shape or reform China have failed for decades. However, we hope that China will be present for the rest of our lives and will be a major player on the world stage,” he added.
U.S. officials, who have been pushing for the meeting for nearly a year, believe Beijing is actively working to undermine U.S. policies around the world.
Biden and Xi will speak across oceans of ideological differences for the first time since November 2022. The US president’s team organized a diplomatic operation to restore hostile relations after Biden ordered the shooting down of a suspected Chinese spy balloon that flew into US airspace. States, USA in February.
One of the key results is expected to be stronger diplomacy: a pledge to talk more about key issues such as climate, global health, economic stability, the fight against drug trafficking and perhaps the resumption of some channels of military- military communications after a high-level freeze.
