With the October 7th attack, when the war in the Middle East began, Hamas not only wanted to capture and kill Israelis, but also provoke conflicts throughout the region. The Washington Post writes this, citing evidence gathered by intelligence officials. The intention of the Palestinian militias would therefore have been to launch an attack of historic proportions against Israel, in the hope of provoking an unprecedented response from Tel Aviv. Some militiamen carried enough food, ammunition and equipment to last several days. Authorities said they were instructed to advance further into Israeli territory if the first wave of attacks was successful, reaching even the largest cities.
While undercover agents try to investigate the causes and possible scenarios, Israeli ground troops continue to find Hamas weapons and infrastructure during operations in the Gaza Strip, including inside schools, mosques and homes. According to the IDF, troops from the 401st brigade operating on the outskirts of al-Shati camp located Hamas infrastructure at Al-Quds University and an explosives cache inside the Abu Bakr Mosque. They would then confiscate dozens of Hamas weapons, military equipment and battle plans. Troops from the 551st brigade, in turn, after raiding the home of a high-ranking exponent of Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Beit Hanoun area, reportedly found a cache of weapons, some of which were reportedly kept in a child’s room. In another attack on Beit Hanoun, troops reportedly discovered a tunnel, intelligence materials and weapons.
