“Shampoo causes cancer”: 8 thousand lawsuits against cosmetic giants

Shampoos used to straighten hair can cause uterine cancer in women who use them. This is the thesis underlying more than 8,000 lawsuits filed in the United States against a number of cosmetics manufacturers, including the French multinational L’Oréal and the American Revlon.

The lawsuits were greenlit by Illinois District Judge Mary Rowland, who deemed the evidence presented by the plaintiffs sufficient to show that the companies were negligent, improperly designed the products and failed to warn customers of the risks.

The first lawsuits were filed after a National Institutes of Health study in October 2022 found that women who used such products several times a year had more than twice the risk of developing uterine cancer. The shampoos in question contain chemicals that cause your hair to become permanently straight. In the United States, they are sold primarily to African-American women.

L’Oréal said it was “confident” in the safety of its products and “believes that the recent lawsuits filed against us have no legal basis.” In a statement to the news agency ReutersRevlon disputes the results of the National Institutes of Health study. The lawsuits also affect several smaller cosmetics companies, including some based in India.
