Operation “Maidan 3”. Russia planning a coup in Ukraine?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of planning to organize a new Maidan in Kiev to overthrow the government.

“Russia is trying to sow division in Ukrainian society, create chaos in the country and ultimately depose the president of Ukraine,” Zelensky said. According to him, Moscow has developed a new disinformation campaign codenamed “Maidan 3” for this purpose.

This is Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the central square in Kiev, where protests took place first in 2004 and then in 2014. The last Maidan played a decisive role in the overthrow of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, who did not want to sign the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.

A few months later, Russia annexed Crimea and, with the help of ‘separatists’, led to the outbreak of conflict in the Donbas.

Zelensky said that Maidan is a coup for the Russians, so the context of the operation is understandable. He added that information about Moscow’s alleged plans comes from both Ukrainian intelligence and allied services. However, he did not provide details.
